The college’s Board of Trustees recently welcomed new members Keith Shurbutt, Dr. Lauranne Buchanan and Dr. Sonya Gaither ’93. Linda Cole is returning after rotating off one year.
Ex-officio members include Zsa Zsa Heard representing the Leadership Council, Rhett Yates ’99 with the Alumni Executive Council and Nia Johnson ’22 as Student Government Association President.
LC’s Board of Trustees establishes the basic policies of the college but does not participate in administrative management, said President Susanna Baxter.
“The board sets the budget, plans for long-range campus development, administers investments, and provides support for needed programs and enhancements,” she said. “We are very grateful for the expertise and commitment these outstanding people offer our institution.”
Shurbutt is an audit partner in KPMG’s Atlanta office, specializing in audits of not-for-profit organizations, institutions of higher education and healthcare providers.
He earned a bachelor’s in accounting from the University of Georgia and began his career with KPMG, being named a partner in 2006. In addition to his client service responsibilities, he also has served as one of the firm’s audit sampling methodology specialists and as an instructor of the firm’s single audit methodology.
Shurbutt is a certified public accountant and a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Georgia Society of CPAs. He currently serves as chair of the staff parish relations committee at First United Methodist Church in McDonough and is on the board of Georgia Independent College Association. He is a past board member of Partnership Against Domestic Violence and Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.
Dr. Buchanan is associate professor of global marketing at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix, Arizona. Her expertise is in international marketing, channel management, customer satisfaction and global value measurement.
She earned a bachelor’s in communications from the University of Georgia, a master’s in advertising from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in business administration from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business.
Prior to her work at Thunderbird, Dr. Buchanan was a faculty member at Arizona State University, the University of Illinois and a visiting professor at the University of Florida. She has served as a project director for Marplan Research, where she worked closely with international suppliers in countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Mexico, Japan, Italy, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
At LaGrange College, she has been a member of the Leadership Council since 2015, serving as president in 2020-21 and a member of the 3D Journeys committee. She is also secretary for the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra and a member of the LaGrange Symphony Guild, LaGrange First United Methodist Church and Talisman Garden Club.
Her work has been published in academic and professional journals such as Journal of Advertising, Advances in Consumer Research, Marketing Letters and Journal of Marketing Research. She is a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of Macro Marketing, and she has served on the review boards of the Journal of Marketing and Journal of Marketing Research.
Dr. Buchanan's work has been presented at professional conferences, including those of the European Institute of Retailing and Service Studies, the Arizona Marketing Consortium, American Marketing Association, and the Association of Consumer Research.
Dr. Gaither is dean of libraries at Clayton State University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from LaGrange College, a master’s in library service from Clark-Atlanta University and a doctorate in educational administration from Georgia Southern University.
Her previous experience includes director of library services at Gordon State College, as well as positions at Georgia Southern, including library assessment officer, learning commons director, instructional technology librarian, information services librarian and assistant government documents librarian. Dr. Gaither was on the adjunct teaching faculty at Georgia Southern for 10 years, as well as an internship site supervisor at Gordon State College and adjunct higher education professor at Strayer University.
She has published 13 scholarly articles and book chapters, presented at 50 conferences and workshops presentations and received almost 30 academic awards or recognitions, including being named to the Wall of Outstanding Alumni in 2007.

Panther fans are encouraged to wear pink to Saturday’s football game against Brevard at 4 p.m. at Callaway Stadium. “This is our way to honor the fight against breast cancer,” said Director of Athletics and Recreation Terlynn Olds. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The ringing of the Chapel Bell is a new tradition for graduating senior students who have received a post-graduation job offer or have been admitted to graduate school, post-baccalaureate internships, research fellowships and military and law enforcement training. The new opportunity is called Sound of Success. Students must complete an online form. They will then receive instructions on how to ring the bell. The bell ringing will only occur from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays when the college is open. Participants are encouraged to post photos and videos to social media using the hashtag #LCSoundofSuccess.

Men’s Soccer
Blake Webb scored two goals to lead LC (5-4, 2-2 USA South) to a 2-1 win over Piedmont on Wednesday night at Panther Field. Evan Sampers and Enrique Hernandez assisted on the goals.
Women’s Soccer
Erica Bower had the only goal of the game as the Panthers (4-5-1, 2-2-1 USA South) blanked Wesleyan 1-0 on Wednesday. Goalkeeper Leila Moss had four saves in recording her first shutout of the season.
Volleyball
Kirsten Boyd recorded her second triple-triple of the season to lead the Panthers (3-13, 3-6 USA South) to a 3-1 win over visiting Wesleyan on Tuesday in Richter Gym. Boyd had 10 kills, 21 assists and 10 digs in the match.
Football
LC (1-4, 1-3 USA South) lost 34-17 at Methodist last Saturday. Damione Ward had 205 yards of total offense and a touchdown for the Panthers.
